Madison Chock Evan Bates Olympic silver

American ice dance veterans Madison Chock and Evan Bates capped a 15-year partnership with a narrow silver medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, finishing just 1.43 points shy of the gold they had long chased. The four-time Olympians, who helped the United States secure team gold earlier in Milan, delivered a season-best free dance but were edged by France’s Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron. Chock described the result as bittersweet, stressing that the duo felt they had performed at their peak in all four Olympic outings. Their near-miss came after years of dominance, including three world titles and seven U.S. championships, and a delayed upgrade to team gold from the 2022 Games following the Russian doping case. Surrounded by consoling teammates and rivals, the pair hinted this could be their competitive farewell.

Highlights

  • Silver in ice dance, 1.43 points off gold.
  • Season-best free dance to a flamenco “Paint It Black” program.
  • Legacy includes three world crowns, seven national titles, two Olympic team golds.
  • Emotional support from teammates underscores their leadership role.

Why it matters
Chock and Bates’ result underscores both the fine margins at the sport’s highest level and the longevity required to stay at the top of ice dance. Their story also reflects how off-ice rulings, such as the 2022 team event’s doping fallout, can reshape Olympic legacies years later.
